Whether in a tannery or at home, dyeing leather gives it a new life, a new color, and enhances its natural qualities. In this article, we explore dyeing techniques, tips for dyeing leather at home, and color trends for leather goods, shoes, and furniture.
Leather dyeing occurs after the splitting stage, where the thickness of the leather is adjusted. It is the first step in finishing, giving the leather its base color. This color will then evolve depending on the finishes applied (shine, texture, etc.).
The dyer is an expert artisan, both a chemist and a colorist. They must anticipate how the color will change based on the planned finishes. To do this, they create a reference sample, called a “master,” using small drums (rotating vats) to dye leather samples.
Immersion: The hides are immersed in drums containing dyes and oils.
Drying: The dyed leathers are wrung out and dried in temperature- and humidity-controlled rooms.
Finishing: Steps like vaporization or passing through hot cylinders set the color and add shine and durability.

Brown leather reminds us almost automatically of the earth, it is often associated with nature.
There is one colour that stands out without even being a colour: white. White is by definition not a colour, so it dazzles, embellishes and unites.
